Treblemaker High Notes

As provided by Ryan Renbarger

Dyersville, after a solid 11-9 month in March, exploded to the top of the standings with a 14-6 month in April. They lead their division by 4 games, and have a 2-game lead over the Northbound Division Destin Beach Bums for best overall record. How did they do it?

Must be the hitting, lets check their stats on the year! – wait, the Treblemakers had a .244 average, good for 6th worst in the league? Ah, they probably just walked a lot, making up for the average by getting on base more than the opposition – wait, Dyersville had a .318 OBP, also good for 6th worst in the league? Hmm…

Must be the starting pitching then… Hmm, starters have a 4.77 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP? Not great, and certainly not “dominating the league” good, especially considering the poor hitting.

So, what is the missing puzzle piece? Ah. The bullpen.

In total, T-Makers in relief have a 2.08 ERA, with a 0.98 WHIP. However, this includes the absorbo Tarik Skubal, and semi-absorbo Tyler Wells (neither of whom was active in April anyways). Omitting them, the Treblemakers’ bullpen has a staggering 1.11 ERA and 0.83 WHIP on the year.

Let’s dive into some specific players. The leading two players in Cy Young voting are Ranger Suarez with 117 votes, and Ryan Pressly with 94 votes. Additionally, Luke Jackson, Seth Lugo and Casey Sadler have had incredible runs. Here are some of the stats:

Yes, you read that correctly. Jackson has pitched 20.1 innings, without surrendering an earned run. Actually, he has done it without surrendering a run, period. I think I can speak for us all when I say that this is definitely sustainable.

Sadler has acted as supreme firefighter for the Treblemakers, never once coming in without a man on base. He has performed excellently in this role, allowing the Treblemakers to hold on to the thinnest of leads.

Meanwhile, Suarez has come in to swap out the opposition, and act as the long relief stud that the Treblemakers drafted him to be. He has exceeded all expectations, and if he continues in this fashion, he may get a spot in the Treblemakers Hall of Fame, despite possibly being a cut after this year.

We will see if the Dyersville boys can continue the streak and push the luck into May, but regardless, Treblemakers are feeling good about a postseason berth!
