Breaking news: Surgery may sideline Strasburg for 2011

This just in: Our projected No. 1 pick in the 2011 I-75 League Draft looks like he’ll miss the entire season. “Tommy John” surgery is likely, though a second opinion is being sought.

  1. Stephen is a crown jewel…for sure…but…I’d say 50+ year old managers may want to look elsewhere in round 1 in 2011.

My feeble prediction…he will struggle to gain his SP status for several years…Nats brass will roll him out there nevertheless…but will be a Kerry Wood clone..a better than average closer…and make a decent show of himself.

That’s the best bluff I can come up with.

    Hope I’m wrong

  2. I predict he still won’t fall too far in the draft — like to the middle or the end of the first round.

He will still appeal greatly to the rebuilding and patient team willing to stash him until 2013, when he will be a 24 or 25 year-old franchise pitcher.

And he would even appeal somewhat to the contending team looking for 10-11 quality starts for 2011 season.

  3. Agreed. I could see someone snatching him without the injury, now the question becomes who takes him and what round? I can see a contender but not a building team taking a chance.

  4. Bosh — stunning news.

I was not aware. Thanks for the post, Gary.

Gotta love it when the I-75 site breaks big news like this.

I for one would be hard-pressed to spend an early first-round pick on a guy with a sore arm, especially when there are other studs out there without health issues, even though the Gophers certainly need rotation help.

  5. Well, what does this do to his draft status???
