Gophers, Dogs survive Game 7s, will square off in World Series

Down 3-1 in the series against longtime rival and lifelong brother Mike, Dave Renbarger’s Gophers reeled off three consecutive wins to capture the Northbound Division Championship over the Superior Titans.

But in the Southbound Division, the Savannah Scorpions were unable to accomplish the same feat, even with nearly invincible Tim Lincecum on the hill, as the Detroit Demo Dogs took Game Seven of that series 6-4 and will be a decided underDog against the Gophers. Detroit survived a three-run ninth that ended on a failed ballpark HR chance for Savannah.

Read on for recaps.

Game Five: Bushwood 8, Superior 2

In a pitching matchup that clearly favored the Titans in their home park, the Gophers faced elimination and were in dire need of an early spark.  And they got it from none other than Albert Pujols, who was mired in an 0-for-16 slump entering the game.

Albert came up in the top of the first with two one and one out and promptly crushed Santana’s first delivery for a momentum-swinging three-run homer that provided spot starter Chris Sampson with some much-needed wiggle room.  The Strat gods were smiling on Albert this time, as the split roll came up 5 on a HR 1-5; FO 6-20 shot.

Sampson capitalized on this bit of good fortune, holding the Titans in check for 5.1 innings and departing in the sixth with a 3-1 lead.  The Titans crept to within 3-2 on Joe Mauer’s RBI single in the seventh, but lefty reliever Craig Breslow preserved the Gophers lead by getting Brian Giles on a doubleplay grounder to end the innings with two runners on.

The Gophers added a run in the eighth and four in the ninth to ease the tension and force Game 6 back in the friendly confines of Bushwood Stadium.

First baseman Albert Pujols cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Bushwood
Gophers defeated the Superior Titans 8 to 2 at AT&T Park.

Chris Sampson(1-0) pitched well for Bushwood in their victory.  He was reached
for 4 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.  Bushwood out-hit Superior for
the game, 13 hits to 7.

Ervin Santana(2-2) took the loss.  He allowed 9 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3
innings.

Game Six:  Bushwood 7, Superior 1

Like Game 5, this one was also an elimination game for the Gophers, but the pregame atmosphere was much less tense.  At their home park with their undisputed ace taking the mound, things were looking up for Bushwood.

And Rich Harden, acquired from Hickory in a predraft deal with just this sort of must-win game in mind, came through with flying colors.  Harden was in control from the start, tossing a complete-game three-hitter while striking out 12 Titans.

Like they did in Game 5, the Gophers flashed their power in the first inning to set the tone as Curtis Granderson launched Ricky Nolasco’s first pitch over the fence for a homer, and Chipper Jones followed two batters later with a 2-run shot.  That 3-0 lead was plenty for Harden, who lost his shutout bid in the 8th but stayed out of endurance and managed to end the game on a DP grounder, setting the stage for Game 7.

Rich Harden tossed a fine 3 hitter and Curtis Granderson hit a homerun and had
2 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Bushwood Gophers beat the Superior Titans by
the score of 7 to 1.

Harden(1-1) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Superior
hitters.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9
innings.  Harden chalked up 12 strikeouts.  Bushwood rapped out 14 hits for
the night.

Ricky Nolasco(3-2) was tagged with the loss.  Dave Renbarger was asked about
the performance of Harden, ‘He had his good stuff out there tonight.  The
fans really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up – and that
seems to give him even more adrenalin.’

Game Seven: Bushwood 7, Superior 3

The Bushwood braintrust had the option of starting either Hiroki Kuroda or Gil Meche in the decisive game.  After some waffling, the decision was made to go with Kuroda, fearing that Meche might not have much left in the tank after his two previous starts.

And Hiroki was indeed heroic, pitching the Gophers into the World Series with 6.2 innings of five-hit ball allowed just two runs.

Following a familiar script, Chipper Jones got things started on the right foot with a solo homer in the first, but the Titans tied it up in the second when Ramon Santiago scored on Miguel Cabrera’s groundout.

The second inning, however, proved to be the Titans’ undoing as Bushwood took control with a six-run rally, highlighted by Curtis Granderson’s bases-loaded triple off Ben Sheets.

The 7-1 cushion allowed Kuroda to coast through the middle innings before the Titans put up single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull within striking distance.  Closer Bobby Jenks was summoned with two on and two out in the 8th and retired Carlos Delgado on a groundout to end the threat.

In the ninth, Jenks was flirting with endurance after allowing a pair of singles to start the inning, before fanning Joe Mauer, getting BJ Upton on a flyout and coaxed Brian Giles into a series-clinching popup to catcher Gerald Laird.

The Bushwood Gophers toppled the Superior Titans by a 7 to 3 score at Wrigley
Field.

In the 2nd inning Bushwood scored 6 runs with the help of 6 hits. That was all
Hiroki Kuroda(1-1) needed.  Bushwood had a total of 10 hits for the game.

Kuroda was helped out by Bobby Jenks who recorded his 1st save.  Ben
Sheets(1-2) was given the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs
in 2 innings.

As reported by Steve Hart

Game Seven: Detroit 6, Savannah 4

Adrian Beltre belted two homers and Ken survives a very shaky ninth to win game seven vs. the Savannah Scorpions and earn the right to play the Bushwood Gophers in the World Series.

Savannah outhit Detroit and left 10 men on base in this luckless contest.

Detroit got on top in the second when Beltre followed a Magglio Ordonez double against Tim Lincecum with a homer.

Beltre homered again in the fourth when he connected on a ballpark 1-8 homer (6) with a runner on to make it 4-0.

Carlos Pena got a ballpark home in the sixth to advance Ken’s lead to 5-0.  Boy was Lincecum disappointing in 2/3 of his starts in this series!!!

Carlos Lee hit his third homer of the series for Savannah off Sherrill to make it 5-1.  But little Jackie Wilson drove in a run for Ken with a double in the seventh to chase Lincecum.

The  ninth was very exciting.  Salty led off with a BB and Clint Barmes singled.  After a strikeout, J.D. Drew doubled in a run to make it 6-2.  Then after another strikeout, Joey Votto singled in Barmes and Drew to make it 6-4.  I then rolled a ballpark homer for Carlos Lee.  With 1-8 chances to tie the game, I rolled a 13.  Season over.  Saito survives for the save.

Adrian Beltre smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Detroit Demolition Dogs
defeated the Savannah Scorpions by a score of 6 to 4 at Dodger
Stadium.

Beltre provided the offensive punch.  He popped a two-run clout over the fence
in the 2nd inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his
2nd of the season) in the 4th inning.  Savannah threatened in the 9th but
Detroit was able to put down the rally.

A.J. Burnett(2-0) allowed no runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Tim
Lincecum(0-2) took the loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 6 and 1/3
innings.
