Titans put Gophers on brink of elimination

Superior is one game away from the I-75 Strat-O-Matic League World Series after winning a pair of tight, low-scoring games over the Bushwood Gophers.

With a 2-1 win in Game Three and a 3-2, 11-inning win in Game Four, the Titans now own a 3-1 lead over the Northbound Division regular-season champs. Read on for more details.

As provided by Mike Renbarger:

Game Three: Superior 2, Bushwood 1

The Titans managed to win a real pitchers duel in this one.  Kuroda was superb, going the distance, allowing just four baserunners all game, one of which was erased by a double play.  Somehow, though, the Titans got three of them in the 4th inning, plating their two runs.  The winning run came in on a sac fly by Miggy Cabrera.  Nolasco survived two 5-9 wheelhouse rolls and a 1-4 homer, all from Hanley, limiting the damage to the solo homer.  Laird got gunned at the plate trying to score (1-13, 18) on Hanley’s two-out double in the 5th to preserve the lead for Superior. Ricky turned over the 2-1 lead to the bullpen in the 6th, nailing down the victory.  Gregg pitched a perfect 9th inning for the save.

At AT&T Park, the Superior fans witnessed a great pitcher’s duel.  Ricky
Nolasco(1-0) finally bested his Bushwood opposite, Hiroki Kuroda(0-1), by the
score of 2 to 1.

Nolasco pitched a solid game.  He was reached for 4 hits and 1 walk in 5 and
1/3 innings.  After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

Kevin Gregg gained credit for his 1st save.  Kuroda was tagged with the loss.
He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing just 3 hits and no walks in 8
innings.

Game Four: Superior 3, Bushwood 2 (11 innings)

A second low-scoring duel ensued, and this time it took extra innings to decide it.  Superior use the bunt to great effect for the second time in the series, as Ramon Santiago layed down a successful suicide squeeze with one out in the 11th to give Superior a 3-2 victory.  Again Bushwood was out in front early, plating single runs in the 3rd and 4th on a homer by Granderson and an RBI sac fly by HanRam to go up 2-0.  Meche was sailing along just like in Game 1, allowing just 2 singles in 6 innings, but ran into a rough patch in the 7th.  With one out Ethier singled and Delgado doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position.  Geary was summoned to face Kendrick, who grounded out to cut the lead in half.  Then Guillen hit the 4-5 roll, Geary’s only solid hit roll, to plate the tying run.  Hardy grounded out to end the threat.  Both bullpens pitched flawlessly through the 10th.  The Gophers mounted a rally in the top of the 11th, but Geise got Ryan Doumit to fly out for the 3rd out.  Then in the bottom of the frame Miggy led off  with a (ballpark 1-11) single off of Jenks. KJohnson pinch ran, as Ethier H+R him to second.  Delgado followed with another ballpark single to put men on the corners. Wood was summoned in hopes of a whiff, but Santiago executed the squeeze to end it.

  1. Congrats to the Gophers. I called Friday and the Renbo brothers were just finishing game 7 (frozen in the 9th inning). I heard the final 3 outs live. A great season for both teams again. jake
